Three Things to Do for Your Heating System This Summer

We’re guessing that your home heating system is not high on the list of things you’re thinking about as the dog days of August approach us here in Connecticut and Northern Westchester.

But summer is actually a great time to think about your hot air furnace or boiler – and even more importantly, it’s the perfect time get some of the things you’ve been putting off out of the way so you can enjoy a more comfortable home and lower bills this fall and winter.

Here are three things you can do for your heating system in the weeks to come:

  1. Get a heating system tune-up – Summer is one of the better times to get a a convenient appointment from a qualified HVAC technician, most of whom will be quite busy once Labor Day hits.

The other advantage of getting your routine heating maintenance out of the way in the summer is that it gives you the luxury of time: if your system has a problem that takes a few days to fix, it won’t inconvenience your family or prevent you from enjoying your home the way it could in the fall, when a cool day or night can happen at any time.

Lastly, if you discover that your heating system needs to be replaced, you’ll still have plenty of time to plan your heating system installation (see #3 below).

  2. Take care of needed repairs – Our heating systems got a real work out last year, with record-low temperatures dominating our region for much of January and February. Your heating system may have survived those winter trials, but that doesn’t mean it won’t need a little TLC before getting back to work this fall.

Routine heating system maintenance will help a technician spot any heating system repairs that need immediate attention – obvious fuel leaks, broken parts, or significant duct leaks, to name a few.

  3. Install a heating system upgrade – If you’ve been on the fence about installing a new heating system in your Connecticut or Westchester county home, summer is a great time to do it – prices are often lower, incentives abound, and you’re not under any weather-borne pressure to get your heating equipment installed.

If your heating system is entering its second decade of use, a high efficiency heating equipment upgrade could help you save 30 percent on your monthly bills – enough to offset the cost of the upgrade in just a few years, while giving you better performance and more warranty coverage in the meantime.
