Heating Oil Now Required to Be a Low-Carbon Fuel Blend

New Bioheat® Fuel Mandates a Big Step Forward

carbon emissions connecticutIt’s encouraging to see legislators in New York and Connecticut taking action to support Bioheat® fuel as a carbon-reduction strategy. New state mandates—signed into law by Connecticut and proposed in New York—will require heating oil to be a low-carbon fuel blend with a specified percentage of biodiesel, as of July 1, 2022. Starting with a minimum blend of 5%, the amount will increase to a minimum blend of 50% in about another decade.

For Westmore Fuel customers, the good news is that we are well ahead of the curve. Westmore has been delivering B20 Bioheat fuel® (20% biodiesel and 80% ultra-low-sulfur heating oil) since 2010! But we’re not stopping there; we are on our way to offering a B30 blend soon.

Bioheat Fuel Vs. Electric Heat Pumps

Renewable fuels like the low-carbon B20 Bioheat® fuel blend we deliver reduce greenhouse gas emissions right now, with even more reductions on the way.

In contrast, electricity production generates the second largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. More than 63% of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, mostly coal and natural gas.

We achieve these reductions for pennies per gallon versus the $20,000+ average cost of a whole-home conversion to heat pumps. Plus, a recent study showed that 9 out of 10 people who have converted to heat pumps keep their existing heating system (heating oil, natural gas, etc.) as a backup. And for good reason—84% were unhappy with their heat pump’s performance in very cold weather.

There isn’t that problem with oil heat. Heating-oil systems produce much higher indoor air temperatures at an affordable cost, guaranteeing that you will keep your home toasty warm even during frigid winters. Highly efficient oil furnaces and oil boilers produce enough thermal energy to heat your home without the need for a backup system.

Plus, we don’t require carbon taxes to induce people to use our product. Stay with us and you will continue to have access to the personalized customer service that we deliver every day.
