It’s encouraging to see legislators in New York and Connecticut taking action to support Bioheat® fuel as a carbon-reduction strategy. New state mandates — signed into law by Connecticut and proposed in New York — will require heating oil to be a low-carbon fuel blend with a specified percentage of biodiesel, as of July 1, 2022. Starting with a minimum blend of 5%, the amount will increase to a minimum blend of 50% in about another decade.
For Westmore Fuel customers, the good news is that we are well ahead of the curve. Westmore has been delivering B20 Bioheat® fuel (20% biodiesel and 80% ultra-low-sulfur heating oil) since 2010! But we’re not stopping there; we are on our way to offering a B30 blend soon.

A majority of our customers secure their pricing contracts online and have also set up automatic payments and electronic statements. This not only saves them time, it helps the environment by decreasing an enormous amount of paper waste.
Now we have another opportunity to cut down on paper clutter. Connecticut recently passed a law that allows fuel retailers like us to provide customers with an electronic delivery ticket instead of a paper one — with the customer’s consent, of course.
Under the law, which goes into effect on October 1, 2021, an electronic delivery ticket must contain the same information as a paper receipt and be provided within two business days of the fuel delivery. As with paper delivery tickets, Westmore Fuel must maintain a record of each electronic delivery ticket for at least 12 months.
We’ll be rolling out the option for electronic delivery tickets soon, so stay tuned for more details.

Q: Is an electric heat pump better for the environment than heating oil?
A: Absolutely not. Electricity is not a clean fuel. Electricity production generates the second largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. More than 63% of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, mostly coal and natural gas.* In contrast, renewable fuels like our low-carbon B20 Bioheat® fuel, reduces greenhouse gas emissions right now, with even more reductions on the way.
